The State Hermitage, ZEISS Microscopy, and OPTEC signed a trilateral cooperation agreement

On December 6, 2016, a cooperation agreement was signed between the State Hermitage, ZEISS Microscopy, and OPTEC Group AG in the Council Hall of the State Hermitage within the framework of the Hermitage Days.

The agreement on further cooperation for five years was signed by the representatives of the three parties: Mikhail Piotrovsky, General Director, the State Hermitage; Peter Schaeffer, Senior Director, Carl Zeiss Microscopy; Nicholas von Korff, General Director, OPTEC Group AG.

The parties confirmed their intentions regarding the close cooperation on a continuing basis in the research activities associated with analytical methods in restoration and study of pieces of art. It is planned to develop a program of and organize joint scientific conferences, workshops, and other events related to the light and electron microscopy and other analytical methods applied in restoration of relics and pieces of art with the use of the state-of-the-art equipment manufactured by ZEISS. The experts of the State Hermitage will be able to receive advice and visit the specialized foreign research centers where ZEISS equipment is used, as well as test the most advanced research equipment and take part in making recommendations on the application of new technologies. The parties will promote the development and holding of the workshops and programs initiated by the State Hermitage.

The State Hermitage, Carl Zeiss, and OPTEC Group AG have a long history of cooperation. «Our agreement is based on work experience. It is a practical, business agreement rather than a framework one," Mikhail Piotrovsky stressed.

The specialists of the museum use ZEISS Stemi 2000 and ZEISS Axio Scope microscopes for materials research at the Staraya Derevnya Restoration and Storage Center in the Department of Scientific Restoration and Conservation. The Laboratory for Scientific Restoration of Precious Metals and the Department for Scientific and Technical Examination employ microscopes for materials research, in particular, ZEISS Stereo Discovery V12, ZEISS Axio Zoom V16, ZEISS Stemi, as well as a ZEISS EVO electron microscope. ZEISS flagship microscopes for materials research were tested at various times. In the year of the 250th anniversary of the museum, they were used for work on a unique collection of gold hairpins owned by Catherine the Great.

The State Hermitage, OPTEC, and Carl Zeiss regularly participate in joint events aimed at sharing experience and information about modern technological achievements in the area of microscopy and expert examination. In 2013 and 2016, Hermitage’s experts visited a Carl Zeiss’s factory in Oberkochen, Germany, and experts from Carl Zeiss and OPTEC took part in consultations on technical development of the Restoration and Storage Center of the Hermitage. The «Art of Restoration» joint international workshop is planned for the next half-year.
